Cleaning my massive iTunes music

Posted December 28th, 2008. Filed under Computers, Internet, Tech

I’ve been going on the exhaustive task of cleaning up my iTunes music collection which has now grown to a 10k+ count of songs. Being stuck in with a music of that size and with various songs that have no ID3 markings at all (artist, name, etc) is a pain to do manually. Fortunately I found Tuneup Media’s TuneUp plugin for iTunes which makes this job a little easier.

I’ts a plugin that sits as a sidebar to iTunes while its running and all you have to do is basically drag and drop the songs you would like identified to the right. Once doing that the software does the whole work for you, thats of course if it finds matches for those songs. I bought the 1 year version of this software which has turned out to work fairly well. Although it has saved me countless hours of tag manupulation it still has its small kinks which I am hoping will be worked out soon. One of the big kinks I have found is that while its saving the data for an album it will randomly get stuck on an infinite loop and never finish that job though it continues on to the following albums and so on. It does not automatically download the album artwork, you have to use the other setting of the software in order to do that. You can’t batch process the whole iTunes collection at once, because it will lock up and kill your computer for a couple of hours, and sometimes crash. It has a recommended limit of 500 songs per batch, and I would personally do about half as much to avoid having the software bug out. Although I still feel this is pay for betaware it has saved me dozens of hours which is great and still worth the couple of dollars spent on this little useful app.

    Hey Roberto,

Thanks for the kind words. Glad we could help you out with your giant music collection. Have you tried any of the other tabs (like the ‘Concerts’ or ‘Now Playing’)? Some people get so excited about finally being able to straighten out their music collections that they forget that we have other features. Regardless, if you have any specific feedback, feel free to drop us a line. Thanks again :)

Thank you Tiffany, I really do enjoy the software and have just recently started experimenting with the other tabs. I really like the tab that shows off all the local concerts or events that may be going on in the nearby area.
